CO2 Laser Treatment Timing: What Treatments Can You Have Before and After?

CO2 Laser Treatment Timing: What Treatments Can You Have Before and After?

One of the most common questions we get before CO2 laser is:

“When can I have my other treatments around it?”

This is such an important part of treatment planning because CO2 laser is an advanced resurfacing treatment, not just a facial or maintenance treatment. It works by creating controlled injury within the skin to stimulate healing, collagen production and skin renewal.

Because of this, the skin barrier becomes temporarily compromised during recovery and needs time to fully settle before certain treatments, injectables or active skincare are introduced.

At M.E. Aesthetics, we always prioritise safe treatment planning and realistic healing timelines to reduce the risk of irritation, pigmentation changes, delayed healing, swelling and poor results.

Why treatment timing matters

CO2 laser creates inflammation within the skin as part of the resurfacing and collagen stimulation process.

While this is how the treatment works, layering too many treatments too closely together can:

• Increase irritation and inflammation
• Delay healing
• Increase pigmentation risk
• Increase swelling and redness
• Increase skin sensitivity
• Disrupt the skin barrier
• Affect injectable results
• Increase the risk of complications
• Make results harder to assess accurately

This is especially important after more intensive CO2 resurfacing, where redness and healing can continue for several weeks.

Can CO2 Laser and Endolaser Be Done Together?

Yes, they can.

At M.E. Aesthetics, we may combine CO2 laser and Endolaser in the same appointment for suitable clients wanting both resurfacing and tightening benefits together.

This combination can be particularly beneficial for clients wanting improvement in:

• Skin laxity
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Acne scarring
• Texture concerns
• Lower face and neck rejuvenation
• Collagen stimulation
• Overall skin quality

However, combining treatments usually means:

• More swelling
• More downtime
• More intensive aftercare
• Longer recovery compared to having one treatment alone

Not every client will be suitable for combined treatment on the same day. Suitability depends on:

• Skin type and sensitivity
• Pigmentation risk
• Treatment intensity
• Medical history
• Healing ability
• Area being treated
• Downtime tolerance

If treatments are not performed together on the same day, we usually recommend allowing around 4 to 6 weeks between more intensive treatments depending on healing and inflammation.

Botox and CO2 Laser

Botox BEFORE CO2 Laser

We usually recommend:

• Botox at least 2 weeks before CO2 laser

This allows anti-wrinkle treatment to fully settle before resurfacing the skin.

Botox AFTER CO2 Laser

We usually recommend:

• Around 4 weeks after CO2 laser before Botox

This allows the skin barrier to recover properly before further injectable treatment.

After more invasive CO2 resurfacing, we may recommend waiting longer if redness, sensitivity or inflammation remain present.

There is also concern that heat and inflammation too soon after Botox may affect how the product settles or potentially increase metabolism of the toxin.

Dermal Fillers and CO2 Laser

This is one of the most important treatment combinations to time correctly.

Filler BEFORE CO2 Laser

We usually recommend:

• Minimum 4 weeks between filler and CO2 laser

This helps reduce the risk of:

• Excess swelling
• Inflammation
• Sensitivity
• Distortion of the treatment area
• Healing complications

Filler AFTER CO2 Laser

We usually recommend:

• Around 4 to 6 weeks after CO2 laser before filler
• Longer after more intensive CO2 if redness or inflammation remain present

The skin and tissue need time to fully recover before placing filler into the area.

This is especially important for:

• Lip filler
• Cheek filler
• Jawline filler
• Chin filler
• Tear trough filler
• Nasolabial filler

Skin Boosters, Polynucleotides and Biostimulators

This includes:

• Polynucleotides
• Profhilo
• Seventy Hyal
• Sunekos
• Jalupro
• PLLA / collagen stimulators
• Other injectable skin boosters

BEFORE CO2 Laser

We usually recommend:

• Minimum 4 weeks before treatment

AFTER CO2 Laser

We usually recommend:

• Around 4 to 6 weeks after treatment
• Longer after more intensive CO2 if the skin remains inflamed, sensitive or pink

Although these treatments are different to filler, they still create inflammation and tissue activity, so spacing remains important.

Microneedling, Chemical Peels and Hydrafacial

BEFORE CO2 Laser

We usually recommend:

• Around 2 to 4 weeks between treatments depending on intensity

AFTER CO2 Laser

We usually recommend:

• Around 4 weeks after less invasive CO2
• Around 6 to 8 weeks after more invasive CO2

This includes:

• Microneedling
• Chemical peels
• Hydrafacial
• Dermaplaning
• Radiofrequency facials
• Other resurfacing treatments

The skin barrier needs time to recover fully before additional exfoliation or stimulation.

Laser Hair Removal and IPL

We usually avoid laser hair removal or IPL on the same area:

• 4 weeks before CO2 laser
• 4 weeks after CO2 laser

This helps reduce inflammation, pigmentation risk and skin sensitivity.

Retinol and Active Skincare

One of the biggest causes of irritation after CO2 laser is restarting active skincare too early.

BEFORE CO2 Laser

We usually recommend stopping:

• Retinol
• Tretinoin
• Exfoliating acids
• Scrubs
• Strong active skincare

Around 5 to 7 days before treatment, or longer if advised.

AFTER CO2 Laser

Do not restart active skincare until advised by your practitioner.

This includes:

• Retinol
• Tretinoin
• Glycolic acid
• Salicylic acid
• Exfoliating acids
• Vitamin C
• Scrubs
• Strong actives

Restarting products too early can increase:

• Burning
• Irritation
• Pigmentation
• Delayed healing
• Barrier damage

Events, Holidays and Downtime Planning

CO2 laser is not a “no downtime” treatment.

Even lighter fractional CO2 treatments involve visible healing, while more intensive resurfacing can involve significant redness, peeling and recovery time.

Less Intensive CO2

We usually recommend allowing:

• Around 2 weeks before important events or holidays if possible

More Intensive CO2

We usually recommend allowing:

• Around 4 to 6 weeks before holidays, weddings or major events if possible

This is because redness and sensitivity can continue even after peeling has finished.

You also need to consider:

• Peeling
• Pinkness
• Swelling
• Makeup restrictions
• Sun avoidance
• Skin sensitivity

Sun Exposure and Holidays

This is extremely important after CO2 laser.

Freshly resurfaced skin is more vulnerable to pigmentation changes and UV damage.

We do not recommend booking CO2 laser:

• Immediately before a sunny holiday
• If you cannot avoid UV exposure during healing
• If you are recently sunburnt or heavily tanned

Strict SPF use and sun protection are essential after treatment.

Flying After CO2 Laser

Flying is not usually prohibited after CO2 laser, but many clients prefer to avoid flights during early healing due to:

• Swelling
• Dry cabin air
• Sensitivity
• Infection risk while the skin barrier is compromised

This is especially true after more intensive resurfacing.

Why Your Treatment Plan Should Be Individual

Not every client heals the same way.

Factors that affect treatment timing include:

• Skin sensitivity
• Pigmentation risk
• Healing response
• Rosacea or inflammatory skin conditions
• Smoking or vaping
• Medical history
• Previous treatments
• Treatment intensity
• Downtime tolerance
• Sun exposure

This is why we assess treatment plans individually rather than giving every client identical timelines.

Final Thoughts

CO2 laser works best when treatments are planned strategically around it.

Giving the skin enough time to heal properly helps:

• Improve results
• Reduce complications
• Reduce pigmentation risk
• Improve barrier recovery
• Reduce unnecessary inflammation
• Create more predictable healing

At M.E. Aesthetics, we would always rather create a slower, safer and more effective treatment plan than over-layer treatments too closely together.

Sometimes waiting a few extra weeks genuinely gives better long-term results and healthier skin overall.
