What is the recovery time after getting lip fillers?
The recovery time after getting lip fillers is typically minimal, but it can vary from person to person. Here are some general guidelines to give you an idea of what to expect:
- Immediate Aftercare:
- Right after the procedure, it’s normal to experience some swelling, redness, and possibly bruising around the treated area.
- Your practitioner may provide you with cool packs to help minimize swelling. Applying ice intermittently for the first few hours after the procedure can be beneficial.
- First 24-48 Hours:
- The initial swelling is most noticeable during the first 48 to 72 hours. During this time, it’s advisable to avoid strenuous activities, excessive heat or sun exposure, and alcohol consumption, as these factors can contribute to increased swelling.
- We recommend to eat come pineapple to support the healing process, this also minimises swelling!
- Bruising and Swelling:
- Bruising and swelling are common side effects, but they typically subside within a few days. You can use arnica cream or take arnica supplements (under the guidance of your practitioner) to help minimize bruising.

- Avoiding Pressure and Trauma:
- Avoid putting excessive pressure on your lips or engaging in activities that could traumatize the treated area during the initial days. This includes avoiding vigorous lip movements, excessive talking, or sleeping on your face.
- Makeup and Sun Protection:
- You can usually resume wearing makeup shortly after the procedure, but it’s essential to be gentle when applying and removing it. Additionally, protect your lips from direct sun exposure and use sunscreen if you go outside.
- Long-Term Results:
- The majority of swelling and bruising should subside within a week. However, it’s important to note that the final results of lip fillers may take a few weeks to settle. The filler may initially attract some water, contributing to the initial plumpness.
- Follow-Up Appointment:
- If we are concerned about any bruising or healing we may schedule a follow-up appointment within a couple of weeks to assess the results and make any necessary adjustments
- Usually, as lip filler is a fairly straight forward procedure follow-ups are not necessary
- Maintenance appointments are recommended every 6-12 months to maintain your results.
- Individual Variations:
- Individual experiences vary. While many people can resume their regular activities the day after getting lip fillers, others may need a bit more time. Listen to your body and follow your practitioner’s post-treatment instructions.
It’s crucial to remember that the recovery process is part of the normal healing journey, and any initial side effects are usually temporary. If you have specific concerns or experience prolonged or severe symptoms, it’s advisable to contact your practitioner for guidance.
