What are the risks of Breast Fillers?
Breast fillers are not as widely accepted or as commonly performed as lip or facial fillers. Finding an experienced practitioner able to perform a breast enhancement is difficult. Surgical breast augmentation using implants or fat transfer are the standard approaches for enhancing breast size and shape. However, if breast fillers have gained more popularity or acceptance since 2021, it’s important to consider potential risks and complications associated with any medical procedure.
Here are some potential risks and complications that could be associated with breast filler procedures:
- Infection: Any invasive procedure carries a risk of infection. If not performed in a sterile environment or if proper hygiene protocols are not followed, there is a risk of bacterial or fungal infection at the injection site. Therefore we recommend ensuring you attend a medical clinic and follow all your aftercare advise.
- Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may be allergic to the filler material used. Allergic reactions can range from mild irritation to more severe responses that require medical attention. This risk is minimised by attending a reputable clinic where high grade products are used. The risk of allergy can be massively reduced by using Bio-gel fillers. This is an option you can discuss with your practitioner.
- Migration and Displacement: There’s a possibility that the filler material could migrate or shift over time, leading to an unnatural appearance or asymmetry. This should not happen with the correct placement.
- Irregularities and Lump Formation: Uneven distribution of the filler material or improper injection technique could result in the formation of lumps, bumps, or irregularities in the breast tissue. This is unlikely with the correct placement and distribution of filler. The risk of lump formation is higher following infections or if the aftercare procedures were not followed.
- Pain and Discomfort: Injection of the filler material may cause pain, discomfort, or tenderness in the treated area. This should subside in 72 hours.
- Capsular Contracture: If the body forms a scar tissue capsule around the filler material, it could lead to a condition called capsular contracture, which may cause discomfort and distortion of the breast shape. This is a rare side effect, it is more common with those with autoimmune conditions.
- Long-Term Effects and Unknown Risks: HA filler is used largely in the face and has been researched extensively to provide the skin with many benefits. However, fillers have not undergone the same rigorous testing specifically in this treatment area. Therefore some risks may not be entirely understood. The risks are minimised substantially when using bio-gel fillers as it is a natural substance made from the bodies cells.
- Visibility on Imaging: Filler material could potentially interfere with mammograms or other imaging procedures, making it more challenging to detect breast abnormalities, including cancer. We will not carry out HA Breast filler enhancements on clients should they have any history of lumps in this area, or within their immediate family. Bio-gel fillers may still be an option if you are looking into breast fillers where this is a concern. Bio-gel does not interfere with mammograms.
- Need for Repeat Procedures: The effects of breast fillers may not be permanent, and additional injections may be required to maintain the desired appearance. HA Dermal fillers last approximately 1-2 years, bio-gel fillers last 6-12 months.
- Unpredictable Results: The outcome of filler procedures can be unpredictable, and achieving symmetrical and natural-looking results may be more challenging compared to surgical approaches. This is not a common side effect, however it is possible and should be considered. This treatment is often used as a way to improve symmetry.
It’s important to emphasize that patient safety should always be the top priority. If you are considering any cosmetic procedure, including breast fillers, it’s crucial to consult with a qualified medical professional who can provide personalised advice, discuss potential risks, and help you make an informed decision about the best approach for achieving your desired results.
